Psychotherapy and coaching for your rebellious and creative inner spirit
About Toby
Hi! My name is Toby Singer. I’m a therapist, coach, and working musician. You’re already taking a huge step by seeking out help and I’m so honored and humbled that you found your way to my website. Welcome!
In my practice, I am dedicated to supporting the emotional wellbeing of adults and children, and in particular, of artists, creatives, misfits, entrepreneurs, founders, and people with hidden creative identities.
I founded These Trees Grow in 2019 to empower young artists with the coaching I needed but didn’t get when I was a young musician trying to find my place in the world as a creative person. Now, my practice offers psychotherapy and coaching to people of all ages and backgrounds.
As a therapist, I work with clients to explore their dreams and hopes, their messy, rude, and uncivilized parts, and the ways in which we all deny ourselves the truest embodiments of ourselves. Within a radically affirming environment, I seek to help clients challenge the ways they are held back from living a full and rich life. I take a holistic, strengths-based perspective, drawing from a range of theories and therapeutic modalities, to help clients examine unhealthy patterns, heal attachment trauma, and find clarity and direction.
As a coach, I help clients clarify goals and make concrete plans to achieve them, shatter creative blocks and move forward with projects, address executive functioning issues impeding creativity, and improve client’s artistic confidence, ability to handle rejection, and support them in conquering impostor syndrome.
Outside of psychotherapy, I spend my time writing musicals and producing records, hiking, cooking, enthusiastically rooting for my Detroit and University of Michigan sports teams, and spending time with my wife and toddler, friends, and big, happy dog.
I’m licensed to practice psychotherapy in New York and Maryland. My coaching services I can offer to people everywhere. I practice psychotherapy in Maryland under the supervision of Hillary Cohen, LCSW, and in New York under the supervision of Linda Bederman, LCSW.

Common questions
Do I need psychotherapy or coaching?
There is some overlap! Psychotherapy sometimes includes elements of coaching, and coaching can include certain elements of psychotherapy. But in general:
People come to me for psychotherapy when they are struggling with issues including anxiety, mood disorders, depression, “stuckness,” emotional dysregulation, career stress, burnout, executive functioning, ADHD, and relationship challenges of all kinds.
People for whom coaching makes more sense include kids starting to make sense of their creative identity, high schoolers considering artistic college programs, early career artists struggling to get a foothold, established artists seeking accountability and new ideas, and “secret” creatives struggling in unfulfilling, non-artistic careers.
It’s also important to note that a coaching relationship can transition into a therapeutic one, as well as vice versa. As your needs shift, so can our work together.
What therapeutic methods do you use?
Every client relationship is unique! In general, I take an eclectic and integrative view, drawing from approaches including psychodynamic theory, CBT, DBT, somatics, mindfulness, the humanist traditions, visualization, and AEDP.
How long does it take?
Depending on your needs, psychotherapy can be short-term (less than six months) or long-term, depending on how chronic the issues are, the complexity of your challenges, and other factors.
By design, coaching is a short-term, solutions-focused program, lasting three to six months.
How frequent and long are sessions?
For both psychotherapy and coaching, I mostly meet with clients weekly.
Psychotherapy sessions are usually 45 min, but 60 min is available. Coaching sessions are 60 min.
Do you take insurance and what are fees?
For Maryland clients, the practice I work with currently offers therapy sessions at $225 for 45 min and $240 for 60 min. They do not take insurance but can provide a super bill for OON benefits.
For New York clients, the practice I work with offers therapy sessions out-of-pocket beginning at $120 for 45 min. They take a range of insurances and will help you determine co-pays.
For coaching clients, my rate is $375/hr, with a sliding scale for financial need.
What kinds of artistic work do you do?
When I’m not working with therapy or coaching clients, I’m a composer and musician working at the juncture of music and theater. My award-winning theatrical work has been produced off-Broadway and regionally, and has been featured in the New York Times and New York Magazine. I’m also in demand as a record producer for eclectic indie artists, while my choral arrangements and original compositions are in frequent use across the country.
